My first contact with 9M0L!!!

I have been waiting for to make a contact with 9M0L from 10 April until yesterday. Keep monitoring on 10m & 6m band, but not able to make any contact due to I can't hear the 9M0L's operator only get the respond stations shout their callsign. Last night around my time 10pm, monitor on 28.405mhz again and this time I can hear the 9M0L's operator calling with up 5mhz respond frequency. Keep trying repeat and repeating my callsign, but can't get the attention from 9M0L. I almost want to give up after tried more than 1 hour plus and I can feel that the propagation is going to close soon. At that moment, 9M0L's operator - CL Neoh (9M2CLN) called my callsign at UTC 1519! Yoohoo... this really make me so excited!!! I think is worth it to spent 1 hour plus just now on the frequecy. My next step will be try on 6m band to contact 9M0L again and plan to upgrade my license from 9W to 9M so that I can operate in multi bands. 73.

All aglow to usher in Chinese New Year

From The Star - 12 Jan 2011:

GEORGE TOWN: The inner city was transformed into a fairyland of lights as 2,400 bright red lanterns were lit up for the first time this year.

The lanterns that adorn over half a dozen roads surrounding Armenian Street, were put up in conjunction with the upcoming annual Chinese New Year Cultural and Heritage Celebration.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng stood under an arch between two towering golden dragons to flip a switch and officiate the lighting ceremony.

Together with members of the cultural and heritage celebration’s organising committee, Lim then took a short walk around the heritage enclave to get a closer look at the festive decorations.

Organising committee secretary Loh Boon Huan said the lanterns would be lit every night until Chap Goh Meh — the 15th and final day of Chinese New Year that falls on Feb 6.

On a related issue, Lim, who was accompanied by state executive councillors Chow Kon Yeow and Wong Hon Wai, said the re-tarring of Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Keling was postponed to after the Chinese New Year.

“The work was scheduled for January, but because of the inconvenience that it will cause, the state government has decided to postpone the job until after the Chinese New Year celebration,” Lim said.

In August last year, the state announced that an 800m-stretch of cobblestone on Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Keling would be re-tarred after numerous complaints from the public about its rough surface.

The Chinese New Year Cultural and Heritage Celebration is jointly organised by the Penang Chinese Clan Council, Penang Clan Associations Youth Committee and Penang Government.

E&O Hotel and Star Cruises are co-sponsors of the event.

It will run from 3pm to midnight on Jan 29. All are welcome.

SOME 2,000 red lanterns will adorn several streets in the George Town heritage enclave to welcome in the Year of the Dragon on Jan 23 and Jan 24.

The lanterns can be seen along Chulia Street, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, Armenian Street, Ah Quee Street, Acheen Street, Cannon Street, Soo Hong Lane and Jalan Kampung Kolam.

Cheah said besides the lanterns, two dragon figures measuring 3.65m each would adorn an arch to be erected at Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling.

“There will be a lighting ceremony on Wednesday. Apart from that, we will also install five pavilions at different spots so that the public can have their pictures taken.

Tourist delight: Foreign visitors taking in the festive atmosphere during their trishaw ride through Armenian Street, George Town.

“At our main stage in front of Yap Kongsi, we will also have a decoration featuring an ancient copper coin with a dragon,” he said.

Cheah said the event has come a “full circle” as this year is the 12th time that it has been organised.
